Projekt BALMAS je projekt koji se svojim aktivnostima naslanja na učinkovitu Međunarodne konvencije o nadzoru i upravljanju brodskim balastnim vodama i talozima, 2004., a ujedno aktivnostima nastoji smanjiti rizik od unosa štetnih morskih organizama i patogena. Projekt ima za cilj uvođenje jedinstvenog sustava upravljanja balastnim vodama u svim jadranskim lukama, pružanje potpore nadležnim institucijama za brže i učinkovito donošenje odluka o upravljanju vodenim balastom (DSS - Decision Support System), uspostavljanje sustava ranog upozoravanja o izvanrednim stanjima u lukama (EWS – Early Warning System), utvrđivanje nultog stanja mora u lukama i kontinuirani monitoring lučkog ekosustava.

BALLAST WATER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR ADRIATIC SEA PROTECTION
Project BALMAS addresses the protection from ballast water pollution, risk prevention, enhancement of the marine and coastal environment in the Adriatic area. Ballast water represents a prominent vector for the transfer of Harmful Aquatic Organisms and Pathogens (HAOP) across natural barriers. To provide a globally uniform Ballast Water Management (BWM) approach, in 2004 the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM Convention) was adopted and is now nearing entry into force.
Strategic common cross-border approach was recognized to be crucial also because of specific, vulnerable, economically important, semi-enclosed environment in which HAOP as well as international shipping cannot be limited by political borders.
The BALMAS proposal integrates necessary activities in the Adriatic to enable a long-term, environmentally efficient and financially sustainable implementation of the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004. The general BALMAS objective is a common cross-border system connecting all Adriatic researches, experts and national responsible authorities to avoid the unwanted risk to the environment and humans from the transfer of HAOP through the control and management of ships' ballast water and sediments.
BALMAS specific objectives include:
· Provide BW and BWM state-of-the-art information and related developments in research and regulatory areas at Adriatic
· Identify Adriatic BW operations and vessel patterns, BWM options and innovative treatment solutions
· Conduct port baseline surveys and monitoring to obtain information about the presence and negative effects of HAOP
· Prepare an integrated electronic BWM DSS, which will allow vessel reporting on intended BW operations;
· Include early warning system (EWS) to alert vessels and environmental protection authorities when HAOP are identified in ports;
· Include DSS for vessel compliance monitoring;
· Include risk assessment (RA) DSS to enable BWM solutions according to the risk identified.
· Develop an integrated BWM Plan for the effective implementation of the BALMAS DSS in all Adriatic ports and enable safer and more effective BWM measures according to international regulations, European-wide developments and local specifics, resulting in continued minimization and ultimate elimination of HAOP transfer in the Adriatic.
· Develop a BWM Strategy, considering financial, institutional and political sustainability in the region for a long-term effective BWM in the Adriatic.

Omjer emisija trajekta je velik s obzirom na broj tih brodova. Polovica europskih emisija trajekta potječe iz Sredozemlja što je sukladno većem broju brodova koji plove na tom području. Koji čimbenici utječu na intenzitet ugljika i energetsku učinkovitost trajekta? Uvide i vizije donosi studija koju je vodeći partner CMCC realizirao u okviru aktivnosti projekta GUTTA zajedno s projektnim partnerom - Hrvatskom udrugom brodara Mare Nostrum i ostalim dionicima i partnerima..
Amonijak je gorivo na bazi vodika koje se može koristiti u određenim gorivim člancima ili gorivo za izravno izgaranje u motorima s unutarnjim izgaranjem. Prema alatu za usporedbu Hydrogen Europe, smatra se vrlo obećavajućom opcijom, uglavnom za veće brodove u prekooceanskoj plovidbi. Amonijak je zanimljiv slučaj među opcijama e-goriva, ne samo zato što je jedino gorivo koje ne sadrži ugljik, već i zato što se već proizvodi na globalnoj razini u velikim količinama, što bi moglo ubrzati tranziciju brodarstva prema dekarbonizaciji od 55% CO2 emisija do 2030. godine.
Dana 16. prosinca 2020. održana je sjednica Ekspertne skupine za zeleno pomorstvo, Green Shipping Expert Group (GSEG), u čijem radu je sudjelovao ravnatelj HUB Mare Nostrum, Sandro Vidas. GSEG skupinu čini četrdeset stručnjaka za provedbu programa Zero Emission Waterbourne Transport - Pomorski i vodeni prijevoz s nula emisija.
